Who we are

Located in Tunstall forest near Snape, Suffolk, which is managed by Forestry England, Hands on Heritage are a charitable organisation offering educational visits for schools, youth and adult groups. Run by a dedicated group of skilled volunteers, we offer day visits and overnight stays for visitors aged 7 and upwards.

We allow students the chance to learn about their heritage and experience how people in the past overcame the challenges of living and working together as a community through a series of practical workshops and experiences.

The site is about being active, positive and engaged. It is about building confidence, solving problems and accepting challenges. There are opportunities for working together or for finding your own space and working alone. Our emphasis is on trying new things, be it a new skill, a new food or a new challenge.

For Schools

Once you’ve booked with Handson Heritage, the site is yours for the day. We concentrate on the prehistoric to Saxon periods and can offer day visits or overnight stays to groups of up to 30 children of 7 years and older. Click here for more information.

For Volunteers

Are you looking for the opportunity to use your free time to share your expertise, receive training in new skills and help young people learn about their heritage?

Hands on Heritage aim to continue to develop the site and offer more visits. We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help teach skills like woodworking, thatching and outdoor cooking, for which you will receive training and DBS (CRB) checks free of charge. Click here for more information.

Many of our volunteers have been working with Cyds youth group at Leiston to provide coracle building workshops for groups of young people throughout the county. This is a Lottery funded project through the Young Roots Scheme which targets work with young people.

So far the project has reached young people in Leiston, Felixstowe, Colchester, Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and Lowestoft.
