Meanwhile – back at the Weaving House and Forge

John hones his rendering skills on the Weaving House walls.

The fall of sunshine through the laths creates a lovely pattern.

…… and Beryl still has many looms to prepare before the next school day.

New hazel wall being expertly crafted by the Tuesday maintenance team.

The finished wall – making the Forge look very neat

In all the excitement of the Kiln project don’t forget we are still on site every Tuesday doing regular maintenance jobs, preparing for school days and, of course, drinking tea.

Roman dig cover – from disaster to renewal

Aftermath of storm Eunice

Following the destruction of storm Eunice the cover over the Roman dig was looking in a sorry state.

This was all that was left.

Within days the team were back on site and began building a replacement.

Yesterday, only eleven days after the storm, the structure had been rebuilt and the cover was back on.

Well done everyone for putting in a tremendous effort. The new cover has had a few improvements made to it and it looks great.

Thanks to Ben, Stephen, Donald and John for the images

Tony and the last shingle

You are not having this one!

Tony could be holding the last shingle he will need to cleave for the weaving house roof. We are on the last leg of a very long and productive few years of making shingles. It is very exciting and I don’t think we can quite believe it. The maintenance crew are now very proficient in preparing and hanging the sweet chestnut shingles. I am sure we could confidently bid for heritage roofing contracts and give anyone a real run for their money. Watch out for news of the ‘topping out ceremony’.

Blimey! – it was cold

Snow at the end of the day

What started as a lovely, if cold day, in the forest rapidly deteriorated towards the end of the day.

Our working party finished stripping off the last of the damaged shingles and started again on the fixing. Good progress was made as you can see

Latest work on the roof

There was more tidying of the site and garage and Beryl had the unenviable task of straightening the old copper nails. Roy is now re installing the furniture into the kitchen shelter. The building of the roundhouse starts this week which is great news.

First workday after latest lockdown

Yesterday was a lovely day in the forest, getting us underway again. Thanks to all the team who came along. We managed lots of tidying up, stripped some more shingles from the roof , repaired benches, started preparing timber for the kitchen shelter furniture. The site is looking ok and it won’t take long to get it looking a lot better.

Simon and Tom hard at work

Of course there was always tea to drink

The rest of us hard at work
